Magnolias are known as Mulan in Mandarin, a popular name in China. There is an ancient legend about magnolias and a scholar named Qin who had a terrible disease. He was in constant pain and he had a terrible stench, no one would come near him.
He saw many doctors and endured torturous treatments, but nothing helped. Qin decided to end his suffering by hanging himself from a tree. He was saved at the last minute by a woodsman who cut him down and promised Qin there was a cure for his disease. But, the woodsman told Qin he had to get the cure himself from the mountains.
Qin climbed the mountain and followed the woodsman's instructions to find a flowering tree with large leafy flowers with a powerful fragrance. Qin found a beautiful tree, collected many buds and seeds and went home to try the cure. In just a few days, Qin fully recovered. Qin visited the woodsman again to thank him and ask him about the magic of his cure.
The woodsman said it was not his cure. The woodsman told Qin the flowers were called magnolias, the flowers were magic on their own. Qin took the seeds he collected and grew his own magnolias and cured people of their suffering for the rest of his life, in gratitude for his own cure. Even today, magnolias are regarded as having miraculous healing properties.
In Feng Shui, magnolias are symbolic of purity, nobility and strength of character. Magnolias are added to other symbols for emphasis, a figurative exclamation point. In artwork, magnolias are often symbolic of feminine sweetness and beauty. Pink magnolias are also known for symbolizing youth, innocence and joy.
